چکیده

Introduction: Modern life exposes us all to an ever-increasing number of potential sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and patients with Implantable rhythm devices (IRD) like pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators or implantable loop recorders often ask about the use of microwave ovens, walking through airport metal detectors and the use of cellular phones. Electromagnetic interference occurs when electromagnetic waves emitted by one device impede the normal function of another electronic device. The potential for interaction between implanted pacing systems and cardioverter-defibrillators (electromagnetic interference, EMI) has been recognized for years1-4. It has been shown that EMI can produce clinically significant effects on patients with implanted pacemakers and ICDs. For these reasons the following text discusses the influence of several EMI generating devices on IRD.

Electromagnetic Interference With Implantable Cardiac Devices

Although pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are subject to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from many sources, relatively few are capable of causing clinically significant interference. However, in the rapidly evolving technology -driven environment in which we live, new devices that could theoretically cause interference with implanted devices constantly appear bot...

iPad2® Use in Patients With Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators Causes Electromagnetic Interference: The EMIT Study

BACKGROUND Over 140 million iPads(®) have been sold worldwide. The iPad2(®), with magnets embedded in its frame and Smart Cover and 3G cellular data capability, can potentially cause electromagnetic interference in implantable cardioverter defibrillators. This can lead to potentially life-threatening situations in patients. The goal of this study was to determine whether the iPad2(®) can cause ...

Electromagnetic Interference in Implantable Rhythm Devices - The Indian Scenario

Implantable rhythm device (IRD) is the generic name for the group of implantable devices used for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Devices in this category include cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and implantable loop recorders. Since these devices have complex microelectronic circuitry and use electromagnetic waves for communication, they are susceptib...

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator during laser transurethral resection of the prostate

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators have been instrumental in the health and safety of patients who are at increased risk of sudden death by ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. Consensus on the perioperative management of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices has suggested that certain surgical interventions (including transurethral resection of the prostate) may interfere wi...
